Akash Bhairabh is one of the different forms of Bhairabh.
ย According to Hindu: Akash Bhairabh is a fierce manifestation of lord Shiva. The word Bhiru means fearful and Bhairabh means terribly fearful form. It means someone who destroys fear or one who is beyond fear, which means to protect his devotees from dreadful enemies, greed, lust and anger. Bhairabh protects his devotees from these enemies. Mythologies say that Shiva manifests in Bhairabh to kill his father-in-law Daksha.
According to Buddhism: In Vajrayana Buddhism, Akash Bhairabh is considered a fierce emanation of Manjushri. Akash Bhairabh is also called Heruka, Vajrabhairava and Yamantaka. His tantric counterpart is the Black Mahakala. However, both symbolize Shivaโs fearsome aspect. Buddhist adopted Akash Bhairabh as deity and Dharamapala or Dharma protector.
ย In Nepal: He is known as king Yalambar in history of Nepal. The Akash Bhairabh is said to be the Kirati king Yalambar himself. Yalambar was the first king to establish this nation and even extended towards Tista in the east and Trishuli in the west. An important form of Bhairabh is in Kathmandu which is also known by the name of Sava Bhakku Deva of the Newars, worshiped by both Buddhist and Hinduists.
Akash Bhairabh has often depicted in Buddhist iconography by a large blue head with a fierce face, huge silver eyes and a crown of skulls and serpents. Usually Bhairabh has many heads and arms, fearsome eyes, he is surrounded by flame. He holds different attributes in his eight hands; Vajra and Bell on his upper both right and left hands, Dharmachakra Flame and Lasso on his middle both right and left hands and sword and trident on is lower both right and left hands.
