White Manjushri (Sanskrit: Sita Manjushri, Tibetan: Jamyang Karpo, Jam Dbyangs Dkar Po and English: The White One of Glorious Melodious Speech) is another form of the wisdom deity Manjushri. The White Manjushri is the Bodhisattva of wisdom as meditational deity, from the Sidhaikavira Mahatantraraja. Although there are a number of different forms of Manjushri that have a white appearance generally when referring to a White Manjushri it refers to either the popular Siddhaikavira or the Arapachana.
White Manjushri is depicted as white in color like the autumn moon with one face and two arms. In this form, he is generally represented with his legs crossed in Vajra posture; his right hand in the mudra of supreme generosity holding the stem of a lotus on which rests a sword; and his left hand raised holding a blue lotus on which rests a book. There are other traditions where White Manjushri has the simple attribute of a book resting on a Utpala flower (as in the representation on the right), or with multiple faces and arms, or riding a lion.
This exquisite sculpture is a beautiful portrayal of White Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. Expertly cast from copper alloy using the lost wax method, the statue is gilded with 24-karat gold and features a hand-painted face. The robes and lotus base of the statue are painted in a rich brownish-red hue, complementing the Buddhist theme.
The five-pointed crown, robes, jewelry, and attributes of the Bodhisattva are all intricately hand-carved, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. The exquisite gold gilding, combined with the brownish-red accents, creates a beautiful and cohesive aesthetic that remains true to Buddhist tradition.
This remarkable work of art was individually handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master artisans of the Shakya clan, who are considered among the best in the world. These craftsmen are the modern heirs to a centuries-old tradition of creating sacred art for use in temples and monasteries. The fine metalworking techniques have been passed down from generation to generation since ancient times, ensuring the preservation and transmission of this exquisite craftsmanship.
