Manjushri embodies the omniscient wisdom of enlightenment - the wisdom that discerns the true nature of reality. He can discriminate between correct and incorrect views and between beneficial and non-beneficial actions to be taken on one's spiritual path. He bestows intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, mastery of the teachings, eloquence and memory. His name means "gentle glory" and he is especially revered in Nepal, where he is said to have enabled the founding of civilization in the Kathmandu Valley. Manjushri is also the patron Bodhisattva of the Kadampa (i.e. Gelugpa) order of Tibetan Buddhism, which is famous for its master scholars, called geshes.
Manjushri's left hand is in Vitarka Mudra, the gesture of teaching and intellectual discussion. This hand also holds the stem of a lotus flower that supports the Prajnaparamita, or Perfection of Wisdom sutra. The flaming sword in his right hand symbolizes the power of discriminating wisdom to cut through ignorance, the root of all suffering. Manjushri, in this sword-wielding pose, is representative of the courage and exertion needed to realize freedom.
This sculpture is a beautiful portrayal of Manjushri / Jambiyang. Expertly sculptedย from copper alloy using lost wax method, the statue has been submitted to oxidation finish to yield a rich and sensuous finish. The fine intricate and detailed hand carvings make it look more beautiful and live. The Bodhisattva sits gracefully upon a lotus throne, expressing the calm majesty. With his head slightly inclined, he seems to smile with a secret inner joy, prompting feelings of encouragement and happiness in the observer. The Bodhisattva wears a finely carved five pointed crown and the elegantly detailedย ornaments. His robes are exquisitely carved throughout, showing marvelous detailing of leaves and vines, where a beautiful lotus base is also intricately hand carved with dharma chakra, leaves and vines throughout the lotus base. And over all, the nice combination of silver plating and oxidation finish lends a pleasing sense of warmth, gently inviting one to linger, leaving thoughts of the world behind. This sculpture was individually handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master artisans of the Shakya clan who are considered among the best in theย world. These craftsmen are the modern heirs to a centuries-old tradition of creating sacred art for use in temples and monasteries. The fine metalworking techniquesย have been passed down from generation to generation since ancient times.
