Manjushree / Jampelyang embodies the omniscient wisdom of enlightenment - the wisdom that discerns the true nature of reality. He can discriminate between correct and incorrect views and between beneficial and non-beneficial actions to be taken on one's spiritual path. He bestows intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, mastery of the teachings, eloquence and memory. His name means "gentle glory" and he is especially revered in Nepal, where he is said to have enabled the founding of civilization in the Kathmandu Valley. Manjushree is also the patron Bodhisattva of the Kadampa (i.e. Gelugpa) order of Tibetan Buddhism, which is famous for its master scholars, calledย geshes.
Manjushree's left hand is inย Vitarka Mudra, the gesture of teaching and intellectual discussion. This hand also holds the stem of a lotus flower that supports theย Prajnaparamita, orย Perfection of Wisdomย sutra. The flaming sword in his right hand symbolizes the power of discriminating wisdom to cut through ignorance, the root of all suffering. Manjushree / Jampelyang, in this sword-wielding pose, is representative of the courage and exertion needed to realize freedom.
This sculpture is an exceptionally beautiful portrayal of Manjushri / Jambiyang.ย Expertly cast from copper alloy using lost wax method gilded with 24 karat gold and hand painted; this sculpture is a profound representation of Bodhisattva Manjushri / Jambiyang. The Bodhisattva of Wisdom sits gracefully in his popular position where he holds the sword in his right hand and the left hand holds the stem of a lotus flower that supports the Prajnaparmita, the Perfection of Wisdom sutra. He wears a finely carved crown, necklaces, armlets and anklets; elegantly detailed ornaments of a Bodhisattva, signifying the omniscient wisdom of enlightenment. His necklaces, anklets, waist and arm ornaments, in particular, are beautifully hand carved. And over all, the stunning rich gold gilding, the fine hand carvings and face painted gives it look more beautiful and live. This sculpture was individually handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master artisans of the Shakya clan who are considered among the best in the world. These craftsmen are the modern heirs to a centuries-old tradition of creating sacred art for use in temples and monasteries. The fine metalworking techniquesย have been passed down from generation to generation since ancient times.
