White Tara's compassionย for living beings and her desire to save themย from suffering is saidย to be even stronger than a mother's love for herย children. As theย personification of enlightened maternal compassion, she has infiniteย sympathy for those facing the challenges of worldly existence. She isย theย female aspect of the universe and the source of all life; thus,ย she lovingly engenders, nourishes and smiles at the vitality ofย creation. Meditation on the goddess grants health, long life,ย fearlessness, patience and peace; and she is especially cherished forย her swiftness in responding to the prayers of thoseย who call upon her.ย Her color white symbolizes her radiant purity,ย but white also expressesย her fundamental nature, which is ultimate Truth, complete andย undifferentiated.
White Tara is depictedย in a posture of graceful contemplative ease with both legs raised andย crossed, displaying a regal elegance and serenity. Her right hand isย extended downward, palm open, with thumb and index finger touching. Thisย ย hand position is known asย Varada Mudra, or the gesture ofย granting wishes and protection. Her left hand, raised to shoulder heightย with fingers extended and palm turned outward, is in the gesture ofย granting refuge and freeing from fears (Abhaya Mudra). Eachย of her hands also holds the stem of a beautiful lotus flower that floatsย above her shoulder as a symbol of her radiant purity and power. Aย distinctive characteristic of White Tara, shown in this representation,ย is her seven eyes. She has the two usual eyes plus one in the center ofย her forehead and one in each of her hands and feet. These eyes indicateย that she sees all the suffering and cries for help in the universe, andย symbolize her divine omniscience.
The sculpture is an exceptionally beautiful portrayal of White Tara / Dholkar on Throne. Expertly sculpted from copper alloy, using the lost wax method, the statue has been gilded with 24 karat gold and beautifully hand painted using the combination of different colors and decorated with turquoise, coral and emerald stones to yield a rich and sensuous finish. The Tara sits gracefully in meditation upon a lotus on the top of a beautifully hand carved throne, expressing the calm and love of one who has mastered herself. The Tara is adorned with beautifully hand carved crowned, necklaces, armlets and anklets jewelries which are gilded with 24 karat gold and decorated with turquoise, coral and emerald stones. Her robes are exquisitely carved with intricate flower, leaves and vines. And over all, the combination of 24 karat gold gild and painted with different colors decorated with turquoise, coral and lapis stones lends a pleasing sense of warmth, gently inviting one to linger, leaving thoughts of the world behind. This sculpture was individually handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master artisans of the Shakya clan who are considered among the best in the world. These craftsmen are the modern heirs to a centuries-old tradition of creating sacred art for use in temples and monasteries. The fine metalworking techniques have been passed down from generation to generation since ancient times.
