Manjushri / Jambiyang embodies the omniscient wisdom of enlightenment - the wisdom that discerns the true nature of reality. He can discriminate between correct and incorrect views and between beneficial and non-beneficial actions to be taken on one's spiritual path. He bestows intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, mastery of the teachings, eloquence and memory. His name means "gentle glory" and he is especially revered in Nepal, where he is said to have enabled the founding of civilization in the Kathmandu Valley. Manjushri is also the patron Bodhisattva of the Kadampa (i.e. Gelugpa) order of Tibetan Buddhism, which is famous for its master scholars, calledย geshes.
Manjushri's left hand is inย Vitarka Mudra, the gesture of teaching and intellectual discussion. This hand also holds the stem of a lotus flower that supports theย Prajnaparamita, orย Perfection of Wisdomย sutra. The flaming sword in his right hand symbolizes the power of discriminating wisdom to cut through ignorance, the root of all suffering. Manjushri / Jambiyang, in this sword-wielding pose, is representative of the courage and exertion needed to realize freedom.
This majestic sculpture stands as an exquisite portrayal of Manjushri/Jambiyang, radiating with wisdom and divine grace in every delicate detail. Crafted with unparalleled skill and devotion, it serves as a profound representation of the Bodhisattva of Wisdom.
Expertly cast from copper alloy using the revered lost wax method and adorned with the opulence of 24-karat gold gilding, this sculpture exudes an aura of sacred majesty. The hand-painted features bring the Bodhisattva to life, imbuing the piece with a sense of presence and vitality that is truly captivating. In his popular seated position, Manjushri/Jambiyang holds the sword of wisdom in his right hand and the stem of a lotus flower in his left, symbolizing his profound understanding of the Perfection of Wisdom sutra. Each element of the sculpture, from the intricately carved necklaces and arm ornaments to the exquisitely detailed monastic robes adorned with flowers, leaves, and vines, speaks to the mastery of the Shakya clan artisans in Patan, Nepal. At the base, the back adorned with winding vines, serves as a testament to the interconnectedness of all things, weaving a tapestry of beauty and symbolism that transcends time and space. Enhancing its allure are the subtle touches of hand-painted coral and turquoise stones, which lend a sense of warmth and vibrancy to the sculpture, inviting the viewer into a deeper connection with the divine.
Crafted with reverence and devotion by master artisans who are considered among the best in the world, this sculpture stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Shakya clan. Through their skillful hands, they continue to uphold a centuries-old tradition of sacred artistry, creating timeless treasures that inspire reverence and contemplation in all who behold them.
