Ganesh is one of the most popular guardian deities worshipped in Nepal by Hindus and Buddhists alike. Large numbers of independent temples of Ganesh are found in Kathmandu valley. Ganesh is said to be the deity of eliminator of obstacles. To begin any auspicious work or enterprise Nepalese people adore this deity with the hope that they may accomplish their work successfully by averting the obstacles if there be any. The form of Ganesh or Ganapati is described in Sadhanamala and Nispannayogavali.
Ganapati rides on a mouse and is white in colour. He has an elephant face. A snake forms his sacred thread. He is four-armed. In the two right hands he carries a rosary beads mala and a radish and in the two left hands a parasu i.e. axe and a laddu i.e. sweet ball. Ganesh is said to be the son of Shiva and Parvati. It so happened once that Kumara or Kartikeyya challenged Ganesh to circumambulate the world. The winner's prize was to be to be worshipped by the people first. Kartikeyya travelled the world with his vehicle peacock several times and was about to report this to Lord Shiva and Parvati. Ganesh then thinking that he would not be able to circumambulate the world with his tiny vehicle mouse came out with different idea. He began to circumambulate around Lord Shiva and Parvati thrice.
This exquisite statue is a stunning portrayal of the Four-Armed Ganesh. Expertly sculpted from copper alloy using the lost wax method, it has undergone an oxidation process to achieve a rich and sensuous finish. Ganesh is depicted sitting gracefully in meditation upon a lotus throne, his head slightly inclined, and a serene smile suggesting a secret inner joy that evokes feelings of encouragement and happiness in the observer.
The statue's robes are intricately carved with detailed leaves and vines, showcasing marvelous craftsmanship. The beautiful lotus base is also intricately hand-carved with flowers, leaves, and vines, adding to the overall elegance of the piece. The lovely oxidation finish lends a pleasing sense of warmth, gently inviting one to linger and leave the worries of the world behind.
Individually handcrafted in Patan, Nepal, by master artisans of the Shakya clan, this sculpture stands as a testament to their unparalleled skill. These craftsmen, considered among the finest in the world, are the modern heirs to a centuries-old tradition of creating sacred art for temples and monasteries. Their fine metalworking techniques have been meticulously passed down through generations since ancient times, preserving the rich heritage and spiritual significance of their craft.
