Green Tara is arguably the most beloved goddess in the Buddhist pantheon. She is the female embodiment of the enlightened compassion and miraculous deeds of allย the Buddhas, offering protection and assistance to all who face challenges in their lives. She vowed that until all suffering was eliminated, she would work continuouslyย in a woman's body for the benefit of sentient beings. Thus, Green Tara representsย the very essence of virtuous and enlightened activity.
Green, being the color of nature and flourishing life, signifies her energetic and vivacious personality. She is always depicted as a beautiful and vigorous young woman with a touch of playfulness. In this sense, she teaches us not to take ourselves too seriously. She delights in a receptive mind and an open heart, for in such a person her blessings and wisdom can naturally unfold.
Green Tara is depicted in a posture of graceful contemplative ease with her right leg extended. The extension of her leg symbolizes her continuous activity, constant alertness, and her readiness to spring into action to assist those who call upon her. Her right hand is extended downward, palm open, with thumb and index finger touching. This hand position is known as Varada Mudra or the gesture of granting wishes and protection. Her left hand, raised to shoulder height with fingers extended and palm turned outward, is in the gesture of granting refuge and freeing from fears (Abhaya Mudra). Each of her hands also holds the stem of a beautiful lotus flower that floats above her shoulder as a symbol of her radiant purity and power.
This exquisite sculpture is a captivating portrayal of Green Tara, also known as Drolma. Expertly cast from copper alloy using the traditional lost wax method, the statue features an oxidation finish and is gracefully silver-plated, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
The goddess is elegantly poised, with her hands forming the Varada and Abhaya mudras, symbolizing her compassionate offer of protection and dispelling of fears. Adorned with a meticulously crafted five-pointed crown, necklaces, armlets, and anklets, she displays the finely detailed ornaments of a Bodhisattva, signifying her compassionate vow to aid all sentient beings. Her monastic robes are intricately hand-carved, adding to the statue's delicate artistry.
The combination of silver plating and an oxidation finish gives the sculpture a lifelike and ethereal presence, drawing the viewer into the divine beauty and spiritual significance of Green Tara. This masterpiece was individually handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master artisans of the Shakya clan, renowned worldwide for their exceptional skill.
These craftsmen are the modern heirs of an ancient tradition, dedicated to creating sacred art for temples and monasteries. Their fine metalworking techniques have been passed down through generations, preserving the rich heritage of their craft. Each element of this exquisite sculpture, from the intricate floral motifs to the delicate folds of Tara's robes, bears witness to the enduring skill, artistry, and spiritual devotion of the Shakya clan.
This captivating representation of Green Tara stands as a testament to the power of compassion and the transformative potential of the divine feminine. As one gazes upon this masterpiece, one is drawn into the serene and benevolent presence of the goddess, whose blessings and guidance continue to inspire and uplift all who seek refuge in her.
