Manjushri / Jampelyang embodies the omniscient wisdom of enlightenment - the wisdom that discerns the true nature of reality. He can discriminate between correct and incorrect views and between beneficial and non-beneficial actions to be taken on one's spiritual path. He bestows intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, mastery of the teachings, eloquence, and memory. His name means "gentle glory" and he is especially revered in Nepal, where he is said to have enabled the founding of civilization in the Kathmandu Valley. Manjushri is also the patron Bodhisattva of the Kadampa (i.e. Gelugpa) order of Tibetan Buddhism, which is famous for its master scholars, calledย geshes.
Manjushri's left hand is inย Vitaraka Mudra, the gesture of teaching and intellectual discussion. This hand also holds the stem of a lotus flower that supports theย Prajnaparamita, orย Perfection of Wisdomย sutra. The flaming sword in his right hand symbolizes the power of discriminating wisdom to cut through ignorance, the root of all suffering. Manjushri / Jampelyang, in this sword-wielding pose, is representative of the courage and exertion needed to realize freedom.
This stunning statue of Manjushri, also known as Jampelyang, beautifully captures the essence of wisdom and enlightenment. Expertly sculpted from a copper alloy using the traditional Lost Wax Method, the statue is gilded with 24-karat gold, creating a radiant and divine finish. The face, hand-painted with exquisite detail, reflects the calm and insightful nature of this revered deity.
Adorned with original turquoise, coral, shell, and lapis stones, the statue boasts a rich and sensuous aesthetic that further enhances its spiritual presence. The fine intricate hand carvings, gilded with 24-karat gold and decorated with stones, lend the figure a sense of vitality and elegance, bringing the sculpture to life in a way that honors both its divine nature and the skilled artisanship behind it.
Handcrafted in Patan, Nepal, by master artisans of the Shakya clan, this statue is a testament to the centuries-old tradition of creating sacred art for temples and monasteries. These artisans are known worldwide for their exceptional craftsmanship and are the modern heirs to an ancient lineage of metalworkers whose techniques have been passed down through generations.
More than just a work of art, this statue of Manjushri represents the timeless wisdom and artistic mastery that have defined Nepalโs sacred traditions for centuries. It is a profound addition to any collection, embodying both spiritual significance and exceptional craftsmanship.
